Olive Trees: Ancient Symbols, Timeless Inspiration

Next week, I’ll be in Cyprus, and I can’t wait to paint its iconic olive trees. These enduring symbols of peace, strength, and resilience remind me of the olive groves in California’s Central Valley, where Portuguese and Basque settlers introduced them during colonization. Back then, as a student, I marveled at their gnarled beauty, much like I do today.

Cyprus has a deep connection with olives. Since Neolithic times, these trees have shaped its economy, nutrition, and rituals. From the Sanctuary of the Goddesses Diana and Hera to Christian baptisms and the olive branch’s role in global symbols of peace, they carry profound meaning across cultures.

Painting them feels like honoring their legacy—an art form inspired by an ancient tree that has witnessed history unfold.

Stay tuned for watercolors inspired by these beautiful trees and the stories they tell.
